The roots of the teeth do not have a protective enamel coating which makes the exposed roots sensitive and prone to decay.
Keep in mind that when the gum tissue has receded from the teeth, it can’t grow back. Although, some treatments help restore gum tissue around the teeth.

“The causes of receding gums”

Many factors can cause the gums to recede, such as:

1) Forceful or incorrect brushing
An incorrect brushing technique can recede gums and damage the gingival margin, possibly triggering gum inflammation and recession. Some of the wrong brushing factors are:
•A hard or medium bristled toothbrush
•Using too much pressure
•Brushing the teeth in a broad, horizontal motion

2) Periodontal disease
This inflammation, also known as “gum disease,” occurs due to an accumulation of bacterial deposits called plaque. Which can be caused by poor oral hygiene, smoking, stress, crooked teeth, and a genetic predisposition.

3) Periodontitis
Periodontitis can cause the gum to recede, and it’s the later stage of periodontal disease. Bacteria begins to accumulate between the gum and the tooth, which can cause further inflammation over time.

4) Gingivitis
Gingivitis causes gum redness, swelling, and even bleeding, resulting in periodontitis.

5) Teeth grinding and clenching
Intense pressure is on the gums when some people grind their top and bottom teeth together as a habit, and it can cause the gums to recede over time or the teeth to become loose in their sockets.

Where bacteria collect, grinding develops deep pockets between the tooth and the gum. These bacteria cause gum inflammation, which can make gum recession worse.

“Treatment of receding gums”

The following treatments can help reattach or restore gum tissue around the teeth, although the adequate treatment depends on the cause.

1) Gum graft surgery
Gum graft surgery helps prevent bone loss and the gums from receding further, and it is usually recommended by dentists when a person’s gums have harshly receded. During the procedure, a small piece of gum tissue from elsewhere in the mouth will be used to cover the exposed tooth roots.

3) Root planing
This treatment is the first option for receding gums. Root planing removes plaque and tartar from below the gum line, where regular brushing can’t reach. Later, your dentist will use unique methods to smooth the roots.

4) Pinhole surgical technique
The pinhole surgical technique involves making a tiny hole in the gum tissue above the exposed tooth root. And it’s for mild to moderate receding gums.

“Prevention”

The following tips can help you slow or stop the progression of receding gums.
•Practice good oral hygiene
•Use the proper brushing technique
•Wear a mouthguard
•Change ill-fitting dentures
•Visit your dentist regularly
